How Risky Is An Outside Wedding In Florida?

TLDR: If nothing else... read the last two paragraphs.

Just wanted to jot down a few thoughts about having an outside wedding. Florida’s natural beauty makes it a popular choice for outdoor weddings, but tying the knot under the open sky in the Sunshine State comes with its fair share of risks. Here are some potential challenges couples should consider before planning their big day al fresco:

  1. Unpredictable Weather
Florida is known for its sudden rain showers, even on seemingly clear days. The summer months, in particular, bring frequent thunderstorms that can easily disrupt outdoor ceremonies. Hurricane season, spanning from June to November, adds another layer of unpredictability, with the potential for serious weather disturbances.

Obviously, the chance of rain is highest in the summer, and *importantly* it is highest in the afternoon/early evening. Also, the afternoon sun is daunting. Have a backup plan. Seriously. Consider morning (9 or 10 AM). I've travelled almost every state in the union (and quite a few places internationally), the peninsula nature of Florida gives it a unique weather pattern.

    Heat and Humidity
Florida's high temperatures and humidity levels, especially in the summer, can be uncomfortable for both the wedding party and guests. Excessive heat can cause makeup meltdowns, wilting flowers, and overheating for everyone involved.

  2. Pesky Wildlife
While Florida’s lush environment is scenic, it comes with an array of unwanted guests. Mosquitoes, ants, and even larger critters like raccoons or alligators can make an unwelcome appearance. Bug bites are definitely not on the wedding souvenir list!

  3. Logistical Challenges
Outdoor venues often lack built-in facilities like restrooms, kitchens, or electricity, requiring additional rentals and setup. Wind can create havoc with lightweight decorations, while sand at beach weddings can be tricky to navigate in heels.

  4. Guest Comfort
Older or less mobile guests may find it difficult to navigate uneven terrain or tolerate prolonged exposure to the elements. Providing shade, hydration stations, and backup indoor options are essential for ensuring everyone has a comfortable experience.

While outdoor weddings in Florida can be breathtakingly beautiful, careful planning and preparation are crucial to address these potential risks. With the right contingencies, such as tents, bug repellents, and an adaptable itinerary, you can celebrate your big day with peace of mind amidst Florida’s natural splendor.

I understand wanting to have an elopement ceremony on a Florida beach, and I don't try to talk couples out of it. Just two pieces of advice.

Have a backup plan. Please. That plan might be in part (or in whole) to hold the ceremony early so that you have time to dodge clouds. The rain in Florida is rarely 'day long', we get thunderstorms that *generally* march through and are gone in a few hours.

Do it early See above. A 9 or 10 AM ceremony is good, 8 is great. Fewer on lookers, better weather, better temps.
